What to Bring to Class?

All Classes

Flip-flops and water bottle/beverage for all classes.

Thai Boxing

Wear something comfortable – drawstring board-shorts and a t-shirt usually work best. You don’t need any gear to come out and try out the class, but when you join the Vanguard Gym Team, you will need hand wraps, bag gloves, shin pads, and a mouthpiece to enjoy the benifits of all of the thai boxing class. We have all required gear for sale at the gym. Safety equipment can be purchased elsewhere, but must be approved for use in class. Later if you decide to start sparring you will need the appropriate headgear, sparring gloves, shin protectors, groin protectors, and mouthpiece – again, you may buy them at Vanguard Gym or elsewhere, but the gear must be approved as safe to use at the gym.

Grappling

For those just trying out the class, drawstring board-shorts and a t-shirt usually work best – some people prefer an Under Armor type shirt. For Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu a “gi” or uniform is required. We will conduct both gi and no gi training. As some people are more comfortable training in a gi, nobody will be required to train no gi. Those who wish to train no gi will be allowed to do so, but must have a gi for learning those techniques that require the use of a gi and for ranking in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Gis and training clothes MUST be washed in between uses – don’t be “that guy or girl” with the stinky gi. Gis are available for sale at Vanguard Gym – you may purchase them elsewhere as well, but they need to be the “jiu-jitsu” or “judo” type as they are of heavier construction and will withstand the constant gripping without tearing. The traditional white gis are acceptable along with any other color your little heart desires – just don’t dye it your self and have the color coming off on anybody elses nice white, clean gis! ;-) Everybody should wear a mouthpiece when training and some may find it more comfortable to wear a protective cup.

Mixed Martial Arts

MMA gloves, mouthpiece, headgear, sparring gloves, cup, shin pads are all required safety gear. You may purchase them at Vanguard Gym or elsewhere – but they must be approved for use as appropriate safety gear. Shorts and a rash guard are ideal although a t-shirt is acceptable. Board shorts work quite well, as well as specific fight shorts, what ever you prefer. I personnaly like Target’s $12.50 board shorts although I have been known to sport some name-brand fight shorts as well. They all have their pros and cons.

Kids Classes

Kids can come try out the classes without any gear. We have a value package which supplies all of the uniform and safety items they will need. Gi, t-shirts, shinpads, gloves, headgear, are all included in a gym bag.

Functional Fitness

Shorts, T-Shirt, and sneakers.
