On Saturday 7th, 2012 our teammate and professional MMA competitor Elder Ramos traveled to Williamson, West Virginia to participate in West Virginia’s first ever sanctioned MMA fight, VLF 34 “The Beginning”. His opponent was an undefeated Adam Sepulveda, and both fighters faced off against each other at 185lbs. In round two, in front of 2000 spectators, Elder prevailed with a second round TKO against Adam.
Elder was cornered by Reed Miller, and supported by fellow teammates Eric Villa, Marco Mendoza, and Quentin Powell, all of whom drove the 7 hours from Northern Virginia to reach the VFL event.
The first round of the bout was touch and go, with Adam proving his willingness to go toe to toe with Elder and throw hands and kicks with power and accuracy. A visibly calm and collected Elder would carefully defend, and occasionally shoot on Adam, taking him to the ground and working his ground game. Into the second round, Elder kicked up his stand up game, following several combos with nasty take downs, ending the bout with a vicious ground and pound for the TKO.
Elder credits Vanguard Gym and his teammates for what he calls a vast improvement in his overall striking, and grappling game over the past year.
Elder would like to thank Coach Doug, Eric, Reed, Marco, Quentin and everyone else on the Vanguard Gym team for all the support, mat time, training time and for pushing him to his best form to date.
Head Coach and Founder of Vanguard Gym, Douglas Esposito had only glowing things to say about the match, saying that Elder looked stellar in this fight, and was impressed overall at Elder’s cool demeanor and superior strategy.
Though triumphant, rest isn’t in the cards for our friend and teammate, Elder Ramos. Coming up in February is one of two potential fights for Elder. VFL 35, “Broad Avenue Brawlers” in Altoona, Pennsylvania, OR the Cage Fury Fighting Championships in Atlantic City on the same day. Whichever fight Elder chooses to take, you can count on him to do everyone here at Vanguard Gym proud! Congratulations again, Elder!
